HAPPY 5TH BIRTHDAY LUCKY!
This year, Lucky's birthday feels like even more of a celebration than usual, because we had a very frightening weekend just past.
Around 630pm Friday, Lucky became unsettled. He was pushing his bedding around more than usual, and could not get comfortable. He kept getting up and coming over to us, then lying back down.
He started to drool excessively, and his heart was racing. When he tried to get up from his bed, he stumbled. That was when we put him in the car, and rushed to the emergency vet hospital.
We had a 30 minute wait once we arrived, and during that time, Lucky was deteriorating. The drool from his mouth became thick and pungent, he was crying, and laying flat on his side. We were scared. At one point, I simply demanded to be seen immediately, and we were taken in.
There was no obvious diagnosis, so Lucky had to stay in hospital for the first time. I can't describe how hard it was to leave him in that state.
Over the next 2 days and nights, he had two doses of general anaesthetic for scanning and X-rays, a lot of blood work, and what seemed like countless medications. We couldn't see him. But he seemed to have a slight improvement by Sunday, and we were allowed to bring him home.
For a few days, he was flat out on his bed, and when he was awake, he was incredibly upset. He was crying and grumbling a bit. But he improved, and he's now nearly back to normal.
The strange thing is, we will probably never know what was wrong. They were able to eliminate the main problems they were suspecting, very serious things. But we don't have a diagnosis, and we probably never will. But we do know that it was a very serious condition.
It was a terrible few days, but it's over now. And we love him even more, if that's possible.
